Team and Individual Highlights of the 1998-99 season

  • Details and photos of each tournament.
  • Participation and learning: high again

17 students competed in at least one tournament during the year. Our team members competed in 21 tournaments (tying a team record), speaking in a total of 565 rounds, more than 100 hours of competitive speaking. That's a lot of learning, and that's always what we are most proud of.

    Major Accomplishments This Year

17 students active on the team!
Our key accomplishment is always the number of students who gained the experience of speech preparation and competition.

A record 14 students competed in debate!
Bethany's tradition continues to grow in this very educational event.

We hosted our own tournament once again!
The "Vocal Viking" has become a standard fall tournament for many teams in the Midwest.

We continued the PLUM parliamentary debate league.
We hosted the second season of five tournaments, enjoying and learning a lot from our regular competitive friends from Macalester, Gustavus, St. Olaf, and Bethel.

We finished strong in the PLUM season standings.
Improving on last year's 3rd place, we finished second this year, and put 5 Bethany speakers in the season's top 10 and 7 in the top 20.

We had a tough and competitive NPDA National Debate Team!
Our two debate teams went 5-11 in San Diego, not bad against the best debaters in the nation.

    We captured national gold again!
Dan and Jon performed superbly debating at Phi Rho Pi Nats in Milwaukee.

We won our second national team award!
Our debaters in Milwaukee took a team bronze in the (get this!) Large School Division of debate.
