Team and Individual Highlights of the 1997-98 season

  • Details and photos of each tournament.
  • Participation and learning: high again

20 students competed in at least one tournament during the year. Our team members competed in 21 tournaments (a team record), speaking in a total of 594 rounds, more than 100 hours of competitive speaking. That's a lot of learning, and that's always what we are most proud of.

    Major Accomplishments This Year

20 students active on the team!
Our key accomplishment is always the number of students who gained the experience of speech preparation and competition.
    12 students competed in debate!
Bethany's tradition continues to grow in this very educational event.
We hosted our own tournament once again!
The "Vocal Viking" has become a standard fall tournament for many teams in the Midwest.
We launched the new PLUM parliamentary debate league.
We hosted a season of five tournaments, enjoying and learning a lot from our regular competitive friends from Macalester, Gustavus, Bethel, and Normandale.
We finished strong in the PLUM season standings.
In an especially good showing in PLUM 5, we pulled into third place and put 5 Bethany speakers in the season's top 20.
We had a tough and competitive NPDA National Debate Team!
Both of our debate teams went 4-4 in Lubbock, not bad for (mostly) freshmen against the best debaters in the nation.
We picked up another state team trophy!
It was a 3rd place trophy in the "Limited Entry" division of the Minnesota State Tournament in Marshall.
We took a national IE medal!
This one by Dan in Informative Speaking in Atlanta.
    We captured national gold!
Britta and Leah performed superbly debating at Phi Rho Pi Nats in Atlanta.
We won our first national team award!
Our debaters in Atlanta took a team bronze in the (get this!) Large School Division of debate.
    Team members: 20 -- Total rounds: 594 -- Total breaks: 28
