Speech Scholarship Opportunities at Bethany
Speech scholarships (equal to 15% of tuition and fees) are awarded to selected students who have shown promising ability in critical thinking and speaking skills, and who wish to participate on the Bethany Speech Team. For the 2001-2002 school year, the scholarship amount is about $1700, payable half each semester. The scholarship is renewable each year if minimum requirements are met.
Application Procedure
- Provide on a page the following information:
- Name
- Home address
- City/ State/ Zip
- Telephone
- Date of Birth
- High School name
- High School address
- Write a statement (one page typed, double-spaced) listing your background and experience in speech. Include activities and accomplishments in school, church, and community during your high school (or other recent) career. State your future plans, your reason for needing the scholarship, and any other information that would illuminate your potential and goals in speech communication. Staple this statement to the page in number 1 above.
- Solicit two letters of reference from people who are familiar with your speech activities and potential. They may be included with this application or sent directly to the Director of Speech Programs.
- Produce a video tape which illustrates one of your speaking performances. The tape may be of a "live" performance, or can be made especially for this application. It should be between 5 and 15 minutes in length, and should begin with these words: "This is (name), presenting a tape in support of an application for a scholarship in Speech at Bethany Lutheran College. This tape is (follow with a brief description of what is on the tape)."
- The college must have received a current transcript before this application can be acted upon.
- Mail all of the above materials to the Director of Speech Programs, Bethany Lutheran College, 700 Luther Dr., Mankato MN 56001-6163, USA.
- All materials must be in the hands of the Director of Speech Programs no later than April 15 in order to insure consideration for the following school year. Applications received after that date will be considered only so far as funds are available.
